The Real Chic Fall 26 Capsule Wardrobe

We’ve discussed some of the useful pieces for a fall wardrobe like loafers, petite denim, and cashmere, and we’ve even discussed fall color theory, but now that we’re officially in September let’s dive into all the pieces I’d recommend for a fall capsule wardrobe. If I were building my fall wardrobe from the ground up this year, I’d build it around beautiful, hardworking pieces that can be mixed and matched endlessly, then add personality through color, accessories, texture, and a few carefully chosen trends.

Here’s exactly where I’d put my money. I’ve included examples from my favorite brand Sézane below (click the photos to shop). There’s also a handy checklist at the end.

1. A Tailored Coat

If I were starting from zero, my first major fall purchase would be a beautiful coat. And I’d choose something classic enough to wear for years: a camel, tan, navy, black or chocolate brown wool coat. Think a wrap coat, tailored topcoat, or a slightly oversized masculine-inspired coat. This is one of those purchases where quality matters. A good coat can completely transform inexpensive clothing underneath it. It gets worn constantly from October through the end of the season and a well-made one only gets better with age so it’s the opposite of a trend purchase.

2. A Really Good Blazer

Look for a blazer with enough structure to make jeans look polished but not so corporate that you can only wear it to work. You want to be able to throw it over:

  • A white button-down and jeans
  • A sweater and trousers
  • A silk cami and denim
  • A simple dress
  • A striped tee and loafers

A great blazer should make getting dressed easier, not more complicated.

3. A White Button-Down

This is one of those pieces that doesn’t feel particularly exciting when you’re shopping for it—but becomes one of the most worn things in your closet. I’d invest in a beautiful cotton or cotton-poplin button-down in white or soft ivory. In the fall, I love it partially tucked into jeans with a sweater layered over it, worn underneath a blazer, or styled with tailored trousers and loafers. And don’t underestimate the power of a slightly oversized button-down. It gives even the most classic outfit a relaxed, modern quality.

4. Two or Three Excellent Sweaters

If I’m building a capsule, I’m not buying ten sweaters. I’m buying two or three really good ones. My first would be a classic crewneck in a neutral color. My second would be something with a little more personality—like a cardigan, fisherman knit, or subtly oversized sweater in chocolate brown, burgundy, olive, or another rich fall shade. Cashmere would absolutely be on my investment list, but a beautiful merino wool, alpaca blend, or high-quality cotton knit can also be an excellent wardrobe investment.

5. A Cardigan

If I were starting from scratch, I would specifically make room for a cardigan. A cardigan gives you an entirely different styling option than a crewneck sweater and can function almost like a lightweight jacket. Wear it buttoned with jeans. Layer it over a white shirt. Throw it over your shoulders. Wear it open over a simple tee. It’s one of those pieces that quietly does a lot of work.

6. The Perfect Pair of Straight-Leg Jeans

You don’t need six pairs of jeans to have a great fall wardrobe. You need one or two pairs you absolutely love. For me, that would probably be a medium-to-dark wash straight-leg jean with a clean finish. A flattering, comfortable pair of jeans works with loafers, boots, ballet flats, sneakers, and heels. If you find your perfect jeans, buy them in another wash later. But start with one.

7. A Pair of Tailored Trousers

This is where I’d deliberately step beyond denim. A pair of beautifully cut trousers instantly makes a capsule wardrobe feel more sophisticated. I’d choose a neutral such as navy, chocolate brown, taupe, camel, or charcoal. A straight or softly wide leg would be my preference for fall 2026. And don’t reserve trousers for dressy occasions. One of my favorite styling formulas is tailored trousers with something very casual on top—a simple tee, fisherman sweater, button-down, or even sneakers. That’s where the outfit starts to feel modern rather than overly polished.

8. A Satin or Silk Trouser

This isn’t technically a necessity, but if I’m building my ideal Real Chic fall wardrobe from scratch, I’m including one. A satin or silk trouser adds a completely different texture to a wardrobe full of wool, denim, cotton, and leather. I’d choose a sophisticated neutral or rich autumnal shade—navy, champagne, gold, chocolate, bronze, or deep burgundy. Pair them with a chunky sweater and loafers during the day, or a silk camisole and heels for dinner (and for more styling tips check out our Chic Guide to Pulling Off the Satin Pant Trend). It’s the kind of piece that makes a simple wardrobe feel much more luxurious.

9. A Trench Coat or Casual Jacket

Fall needs something between a blazer and a wool coat. This is where I’d invest in a trench coat, denim jacket, barn jacket, field jacket, suede jacket, or other relaxed outer layer. And this is one place where I’d let the wardrobe have a little fun and use the “timeless + slightly unexpected” styling formula. Pair a traditional barn jacket with a feminine skirt. Wear suede with denim and loafers. Throw a casual jacket over tailored trousers. The contrast keeps classic clothing from looking too predictable.

10. A Little Black Dress—or Navy Dress

Even if black isn’t the dominant color in your wardrobe, I still think every fall capsule benefits from having one simple, polished dress. If black doesn’t feel like you, choose navy. Look for something that can go from daytime to dinner with a simple change of accessories. A knit midi dress, shirt dress, or understated sweater dress would all work beautifully. The important thing is that it isn’t so formal that you only wear it once or twice.

11. Leather Loafers

If I could only choose one fall shoe, I’d probably choose a beautiful pair of leather loafers. They work with almost everything including jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses. For fall 2026, I’d look for a classic penny loafer or slightly substantial loafer rather than something extremely embellished or trendy.

12. A Pair of Brown or Black Boots

The second shoe I’d buy would be a pair of boots. Again, I’d resist the temptation to buy whatever boot silhouette is dominating social media and instead choose something that complements the rest of your wardrobe. A sleek ankle boot, riding-inspired boot, or simple knee-high boot in black leather, brown leather, chocolate, or suede would be my preference. Brown boots are particularly useful because they bridge the gap between your lighter fall neutrals and your darker winter wardrobe.

13. A Simple Ballet Flat

A fall capsule doesn’t need to be entirely about boots and loafers. I’d add one feminine flat—ideally a ballet flat, Mary Jane, or similarly simple shoe. Black, Navy, brown, burgundy, or a soft neutral would all work. It’s a small addition, but it changes the mood of an outfit completely.

14. A Classic Sneaker

You need one sneaker that doesn’t make your outfit look like you’re going to the gym. I’d choose a simple leather or low-profile sneaker in white, cream, or another neutral. This is especially important in a real-life wardrobe. A capsule isn’t successful if everything requires careful planning and uncomfortable shoes. The chicest wardrobe still needs to accommodate errands, school runs, travel, and everyday life.

15. A Great Belt

A belt is one of the smallest investments on this list but one of the most useful. I’d buy a simple leather belt in black or brown, ideally with understated hardware. Wear it with jeans, trousers, dresses, or over a cardigan. It can make an outfit look finished without making it look overly accessorized.

16. A Silk Scarf

If we’re talking about the Real Chic wardrobe, we’re obviously adding a silk scarf. This is one of those accessories that can make basics feel special. Tie it around your neck with a white button-down. Wrap it around the handle of your handbag. Wear it in your hair. Tie it onto a ponytail. Or simply let it peek out from underneath a coat. I would choose a pattern that incorporates colors that are already in your wardrobe.

17. One Beautiful Everyday Handbag

If I were starting over, I’d buy one really good everyday bag. Something structured but practical enough for everyday life. Depending on your wardrobe, that could be a classic tote, shoulder bag, satchel, or top-handle bag. The goal is a bag that works with at least 70–80% of what you’re wearing.

18. A Useful Tote

I’d also invest in a practical tote. A beautiful canvas tote, nylon tote, or understated leather tote is invaluable for carrying the things that inevitably accumulate throughout the day. It doesn’t have to be luxurious, it just needs to be functional without looking sloppy.

19. A Leather or Suede Jacket

If I had already purchased the essentials and had room for one more investment, this would be high on my list. A leather or suede jacket is the easiest way to add a little edge to an otherwise classic wardrobe. That little bit of tension is what makes an outfit feel cool.

20. A Few Rich Fall Accessories

This is where I’d allow myself to have fun. Instead of buying lots of trendy pieces, I’d use accessories to introduce the colors of the season.

Think: Burgundy. Olive. Chocolate. Deep green. Navy. Camel.

  • A burgundy handbag.
  • An olive scarf.
  • Chocolate suede shoes.
  • A deep green sweater.
  • A tortoiseshell belt.
  • A gold watch.
  • A pair of oversized sunglasses.

These small additions can make a very classic wardrobe feel current without requiring you to rebuild your closet every season.
