The other day, I was running through my fall checklist when I decided it was time to add a new classic pump to my wardrobe. Nothing too fancy. Just a beautiful leather workhorse I could reach for again and again.

My closet already has several stilettos, but I’m not reaching for them as often as I used to. This time, I wanted something with a slightly lower heel. I had three inches in mind: enough height to feel polished, but practical enough for everyday wear.

And while a heeled flip-flop may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it does say something interesting about where fashion is headed: we want comfort, but we’re not willing to give up style.

For me, the easiest way to embrace the kitten heel is to keep the rest of the outfit classic.

Think:

Dark denim + white button-down + pointed kitten heels + structured handbag

or

Wide-leg trousers + fitted knit + kitten-heel pumps + statement jewelry

For something a little more feminine:

I don’t think the kitten heel is having a moment simply because fashion has decided we need another “new” shoe trend.
