I’ve been wearing loafers a lot lately, and I love them. I’m also looking forward to pulling out my leather ankle boots soon as the weather gets cooler. But I can’t help glancing over at the Uggs tucked away in the corner of my closet a little longingly.
They’re just SO comfortable.
In the dead of winter, you’ll definitely find me in my beloved Ugg Bailey boots. I don’t care if they’re trending or not — when it’s freezing outside, few things feel better than slipping into a pair of warm, cozy Uggs.
But right now, as we transition into fall, I find myself hesitating.
When I have sleeker options like loafers and leather ankle boots sitting in my closet, do I really want to reach for the Uggs? And, perhaps more importantly, can Uggs actually look chic?
It’s a question I’ve been thinking about lately because Uggs occupy such a strange place in the fashion world. They’re incredibly comfortable and have become a legitimate fashion staple, but they’re also undeniably casual. And while I love a cozy outfit, I don’t necessarily want my fall wardrobe to look like I gave up on getting dressed the minute temperatures dropped.
So where does that leave us?
Can Uggs actually be chic — or are they simply the shoes we wear when comfort wins?
Now that I’ve done some more research and spent time studying outfits, I think the answer is a little more nuanced than you might expect.
The secret isn’t necessarily making Uggs look dressy. It’s understanding how to make their cozy, casual aesthetic feel intentional.
So, Are Uggs Actually Chic?
Yes — but not in the traditional sense of the word chic.
A classic Ugg boot isn’t going to give you the same polished effect as a sleek leather riding boot, elegant loafer, or pointed-toe ankle boot. The rounded toe, plush lining, and soft suede construction are inherently casual.
But chic doesn’t always mean formal or sophisticated.
Today’s style landscape has embraced a more relaxed definition of polish. Think oversized sweaters, straight-leg denim, relaxed tailoring, beautiful basics, and intentionally casual shoes. In that context, Uggs can absolutely work.
The key is contrast.
Instead of wearing Uggs with an outfit that is casual from head to toe, pair them with pieces that have a little more structure or refinement.
The Most Chic Way to Wear Uggs
1. Try the Mini or Shorter Styles
If you’re hesitant about the traditional tall Ugg boot, a shorter silhouette can be an easier entry point.
Mini and ankle-height styles tend to feel a little more streamlined and work really well with:
- Straight-leg jeans
- Cropped pants
- Leggings
- Casual dresses
- Sweater skirts
They’re also an easy way to embrace the Ugg trend without letting the boots completely dominate your outfit.
2. Choose Classic Neutrals
When the goal is a polished look, color matters.
Classic shades like chestnut, chocolate brown, black, cream, and taupe tend to be the easiest to style.
Chestnut Uggs with denim and camel look very classic, while chocolate brown can feel a little richer and more sophisticated.
If your wardrobe is already built around neutrals, Uggs can fit surprisingly seamlessly into it.
3. Let Them Be the Casual Part
One of my favorite ways to wear Uggs is to deliberately make them the least polished element of the outfit.
For example:
Wool coat + cashmere sweater + straight-leg jeans + Uggs
The coat and sweater elevate the outfit, while the Uggs make it feel relaxed.
That contrast is what keeps the look from feeling like you simply threw on whatever was most comfortable.
What Makes Uggs Look Less Chic?
The problem isn’t necessarily the Ugg itself. It’s often too many casual pieces at once.
An outfit can start feeling sloppy when you combine Uggs with several other extremely relaxed pieces — oversized sweatpants, a very oversized hoodie, a puffer coat, and a giant casual tote, for example.
Of course, that’s perfectly appropriate for running errands or a cozy day at home. But if you’re trying to create a more polished look, adding a little structure helps.
You also don’t need to force Uggs into situations where they’re simply not appropriate. Of course they’re not the shoes to reach for with a cocktail dress, tailored suit, or elegant evening outfit.
Chic is also about knowing when something belongs.
Uggs Can Be Chic — When the Outfit Has Intention
Perhaps the better question isn’t “Are Uggs chic?”
It’s “Can Uggs be part of a chic outfit?”
Absolutely.
Fashion has become much more comfortable with the idea that comfort and style aren’t mutually exclusive. The current obsession with cozy textures, relaxed silhouettes, and practical footwear has made room for shoes that prioritize comfort without completely abandoning aesthetics.
Uggs aren’t going to replace your favorite leather loafers or beautiful knee-high boots.
And they don’t need to.
They’re the shoes you reach for when it’s freezing outside, you’re running errands, dropping the kids off, traveling, or simply want to feel like you’re walking around in slippers — without actually wearing slippers.
The trick is to style the coziness rather than apologize for it.
Pair them with beautiful basics. Add a little structure. Keep the color palette intentional. And let the boots be casual.
