I believe there’s a difference between being well dressed and looking truly elegant.
For me, elegance has very little to do with wearing expensive clothes or following every new trend. It’s more about how you put things together. The right proportions. Beautiful fabrics. Thoughtful accessories. And knowing when to stop.
Over the years, I’ve become much more interested in building a wardrobe that feels timeless rather than constantly chasing what’s new. I still love a good trend, but I want the classics in my closet to do most of the work.
These are a few of the styling rules I find myself coming back to again and again–I’ve been writing about most of these since the early twenty-tens.

1. Fit is everything
You can wear the most beautiful dress in the room, but if it doesn’t fit properly, it won’t look its best.
I’d rather have a reasonably priced piece that fits beautifully than an expensive piece that doesn’t.
Pay attention to where the shoulder sits, where a trouser hits your ankle, whether a jacket pulls when you button it, and whether a dress skims rather than clings.
And when necessary, get it tailored. At 5’2 it is almost always a necessity for me. A little tailoring can make a good piece look exceptional.
2. Let one thing have the moment
I love a statement accessory, a beautiful print, a great shoe, or a bold lip. I just don’t think everything needs to make a statement at the same time.
If I’m wearing a dramatic necklace, I might keep the earrings simple. If the dress is the star, I’ll let the accessories play a supporting role.
Elegance often comes from knowing what not to add.
3. Invest in beautiful basics
We talk about investment pieces quite a bit here. A great blazer. A beautiful coat. Well-fitting trousers. A classic pump. A quality handbag.
These are the pieces that quietly make everything else in your wardrobe work harder.
My preference has always been buying fewer things that I really love rather than filling my closet with pieces that will feel dated in a season or two.
4. Mix high and low
An elegant wardrobe doesn’t have to mean designer head to toe.
I love mixing investment pieces with more accessible finds. A beautiful handbag with a simple knit. A great blazer with jeans. A classic coat with a very inexpensive scarf.
It’s the combination that makes an outfit feel personal.
5. Pay attention to your accessories
Accessories are often what take an outfit from simply dressed to polished.
A beautiful watch. A pair of pearl or gold earrings. A great belt. A silk scarf. Sunglasses that flatter your face.
And I’m a big believer in having a few signature pieces you wear again and again. There’s something incredibly chic about becoming known for certain things.
6. Don’t underestimate monochromatic dressing
One of my favorite ways to make an outfit look instantly polished is to keep the color palette simple.
Black with black. Navy with navy. Cream with camel. Different shades of the same color can create an outfit that looks sophisticated without requiring much effort.
And when you do want color, one beautiful accent can be all you need.
7. Choose quality fabrics whenever you can
You can often see when a fabric looks beautiful.
Silk, cashmere, wool, linen, cotton, leather. Natural fabrics tend to have a beautiful drape and texture that can make even a simple outfit feel elevated.
That doesn’t mean everything in your closet needs to be expensive. It simply means I pay much more attention now to how something feels and falls than I did years ago.
8. Don’t overlook your shoes
Shoes can completely change the feeling of an outfit.
A beautiful leather pump can make jeans feel polished. A sleek flat can make a dress feel more modern. A classic loafer can instantly make trousers look intentional.
And yes, I’ve reached the age where I’m perfectly happy to trade a very high heel for something I can actually walk in.
Elegance should not require suffering.
9. Keep your handbag polished
You don’t need a closet full of handbags (I’ve learned this lesson the hard way), but I do think a beautiful, well-maintained bag can make a significant difference.
Classic shapes and beautiful leather tend to have staying power. And whether your bag is designer or not, keeping it clean and in good condition makes the entire outfit feel more considered.
10. Know when enough is enough
Perhaps my favorite rule of all.
Before leaving the house, take one last look in the mirror and ask yourself if you really need anything else.
Sometimes the answer is yes.
And sometimes taking off the necklace, changing the shoe, or leaving the third accessory at home is exactly what the outfit needs.
Elegance isn’t about doing more. It’s about being intentional about what you do.
And maybe that’s what I love most about personal style at this stage of life. I’m less interested in dressing to prove that I know what’s fashionable and much more interested in dressing in a way that feels like me.
Classic. Polished. Feminine. With just enough personality to keep things interesting.
Because ultimately, the most elegant thing you can wear is confidence in your own style.
