Although the official start of fall is still a couple of weeks away, there’s something about September in general that makes me want to get my life together. Especially once the weather starts shifting and my schedule starts picking up (this year it’s picking up fast). So for me, September has always felt a little like a second New Year—a chance to pause, take stock, and decide what I want the next few months to look like. And while I obviously love a good fall wardrobe refresh as much as anyone, I think the best kind of seasonal reset goes beyond your closet. September is the perfect time to reset your schedule, home, routines, mindset, and even your expectations for yourself.
But you don’t have to completely reinvent your life. Think of it less as a transformation and more as an edit. Just like you might go through your wardrobe and decide what still works, what needs to go, and what you’re missing, you can do the same with the rest of your life. Here’s how I’m approaching the September reset this year.
Reset Your Routine
Summer has a way of throwing routines out the window. Later bedtimes. Spontaneous plans. Vacations. Summer break for kids. Meals at random times. A general willingness to say, “We’ll figure it out later.” I think that’s part of the fun of summer. But eventually, I start craving a little structure again.
September is a great time to look at your daily routine and ask: What actually makes my days feel better? Maybe it’s getting up a little earlier. Going to bed at a more reasonable hour. Taking a walk in the morning. Making time for breakfast. Getting dressed instead of staying in pajamas all day. Setting aside a few minutes in the evening to reset the house.
Don’t try to implement twelve new habits at once. Choose two or three small things that make your everyday life feel calmer and more intentional. The goal isn’t to create the perfect morning routine. It’s to create a routine that actually works for your life.
Reset Your Schedule
September can also be a good time to take a hard look at your calendar. Before the fall gets completely booked, ask yourself:
What do I actually want to make time for this season?
It’s easy to fill every available weekend with activities, appointments, events, errands, and obligations. Before you know it, you’re preparing for the holidays and wondering where the season went. Instead, decide what matters to you before your calendar decides for you.
Maybe you want more family weekends at home. Maybe you want to get back into hosting friends. Maybe you want to make time for reading, exercising, traveling, or finally finishing that project you’ve been putting off. And maybe you simply want more empty space. That’s allowed, too. One of the most underrated luxuries is having a calendar that isn’t completely full.
Reset Your Expectations
This might be the most important part of the September reset. September can bring a lot of pressure. The pressure to get organized. The pressure to be productive. The pressure to make the most of the season. But your life doesn’t have to look like someone else’s version of a perfect fall.
Maybe you’re entering the season feeling energized and excited. Maybe you’re exhausted. Maybe you’re starting something new. Maybe you’re dealing with uncertainty. Maybe you simply want things to feel a little easier. All of those are valid. A reset shouldn’t become another list of things you’re failing to accomplish. Instead, ask yourself:
What would make my life feel better this season?
Then start there.
Choose What You Want More Of
Rather than creating a giant list of goals, choose a few things you want more of this fall. More time outside. More dinners at home. More books. More family time. More creativity. More movement. More time with friends. More beautiful everyday moments. More rest. More confidence. More fun. It sounds simple, but this question can completely change how you approach a season.
Once you know what you want more of, you can start making decisions accordingly. If you want more rest, you may need to stop overbooking yourself. If you want more family time, you may need to protect your weekends. If you want more creativity, you may need to schedule time for it instead of waiting for inspiration to magically appear. Intentional living isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about making your choices match what you actually value.
Create a Few Things to Look Forward To
Finally, give yourself something to anticipate. It doesn’t have to be a vacation or a major event. Maybe it’s your first really cool-weather morning with a coffee and a sweater. One of the best things about fall is that it gives us so many little moments to look forward to.
Don’t rush through them.
Your September Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect
The beauty of a reset is that it doesn’t require you to start over. You can keep the routines that work. Keep the clothes you love. Keep the traditions that make you happy. Keep the relationships that nourish you. Keep the parts of your life that already feel good. That’s really what I love about September. It isn’t quite the beginning of the year, so there’s less pressure to become an entirely new person. It’s simply an invitation to pause, edit, tidy up, reconsider, and make a few thoughtful changes before the busyness of fall really begins.
So before you buy the new sweater, fill the calendar, or start making your list of everything you want to accomplish this season, take a moment to ask yourself:
What do I want my life to feel like this fall?
Then build your season around that answer.
