I enjoyed reading Courtney’s September Reset post, and it got me thinking that maybe my home could use a little refresh, too. Not a complete makeover. I’m certainly not ready to pack away everything I love and replace it with pumpkins and orange leaves just yet.
Instead, I like making a few thoughtful changes that make the house feel warmer, cozier, and ready for the season ahead. Sometimes, it only takes a few small shifts to make your home feel completely different.
Fall decorating does not have to mean buying an entirely new collection of seasonal decor. Sometimes, the chicest changes are the smallest ones.
Here are 9 simple shifts that can make your home feel fall-ready.
1. Change Your Throw Pillows; Add a Cozy Throw
One of the easiest ways to transition your home for a new season is with pillows.
Swap lighter summer fabrics for richer textures, such as velvet, boucle, linen, or woven fabrics. You do not have to choose traditional fall colors either. Cream, camel, chocolate brown, navy, olive, and burgundy can all create a beautiful autumnal feel while keeping your decor sophisticated.
Drape a beautiful throw over the arm of a sofa, the end of your bed, or the back of an accent chair.
Look for something substantial and soft. A cashmere-inspired knit, wool blend, or textured blanket instantly makes a room feel more inviting.
Nothing beats having a beautiful throw within reach when the temperature starts to drop.
2. Switch Up Your Bedding
You do not need an entirely new bedroom to make it feel more seasonal. I replaced our bedding this summer, and I love how it gave the room an elevated look. But I will probably add a quilt, coverlet, or heavier throw to our existing bedding. Layering is the key.
Slightly warmer textures and deeper neutrals as fall approaches.
Think less “fall-themed bedroom” and more beautiful bedroom that happens to feel perfect for fall.
3. Give Your Entryway a Little Refresh
Your entryway sets the tone for the entire home, so give it a little attention.
Remove the remnants of summer and replace them with something simple and seasonal. A small arrangement of branches, a beautiful bowl, a candle, or a vase filled with seasonal flowers can make a surprisingly big difference.
The goal is welcoming, not cluttered.
4. Add Seasonal Flowers and Greenery
You do not need to decorate with pumpkins everywhere to bring fall indoors.
Instead, bring in natural elements.
Try branches, eucalyptus, dried grasses, hydrangeas, mums, or seasonal foliage. Even a simple arrangement in a beautiful vase can give a room that subtle autumn feeling.
And if you prefer a more neutral home, this is an especially easy way to decorate without introducing traditional fall colors.
5. Change Your Dining Table
Fall naturally makes us want to gather around the table, so give yours a little refresh.
Switch out lightweight summer linens for something with more texture. Add cloth napkins, a seasonal centerpiece, or a few small candles.
You don’t need a complicated tablescape. Sometimes a beautiful runner, simple flowers, and candlelight are all you need.
6. Make Your Kitchen Feel Cozier
The kitchen is one of my favorite places to make small seasonal changes.
Bring out your favorite mugs. Add a pretty wooden cutting board to the counter. Display a bowl of apples or pears. Put a seasonal hand towel near the sink.
These little details can make everyday routines feel a little more special.
And of course, this is the season for soups, baked goods, and all the comfort food. Your kitchen should look ready for it. I just put my new cookbook, When Southern Women Cook, on display, and it feels perfect for the upcoming season.
7. Edit Your Decor
Before adding anything new, take a few minutes to remove what no longer feels right.
Put away some of the lighter, summery accessories. Rearrange a bookshelf. Clear off a surface. Move a few pieces from one room to another.
Sometimes the best seasonal refresh is simply creating a little more breathing room.
A home does not need more stuff to feel different.
8. Create One Cozy Corner
Rather than decorating every room, choose one space to make especially inviting.
Maybe it’s your favorite chair with a throw and a reading lamp. Maybe it’s your bedroom nightstand with a candle and a stack of books. Or perhaps it’s the sofa where everyone gathers in the evening.
Create a little corner that makes you want to slow down. I just added a plush swivel reading chair to my office, and it feels like the perfect place to unwind.
Because, for me, that is really what fall decorating is about.
9. Bring Out the Candles
And last but not least, fall is the perfect time to lean into scent.
Replace bright summer fragrances with warmer notes like amber, sandalwood, vanilla, fig, cedar, or spice.
I especially love placing candles throughout the house rather than limiting them to the living room. A candle in the entryway, bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen can make the entire house feel more intentional.
Make It Feel Like Fall, Not a Fall Theme
I have never been a fan of decorating simply because the calendar says it’s time.
Instead, I want my home to reflect the feeling of the season.
Fall is about gathering, slowing down, cozy evenings, beautiful meals, and creating a home that feels welcoming. You can capture all of that without covering every surface in pumpkins (though I do have a pretty nice ceramic and glass pumpkin collection.
A few intentional changes can completely shift the feeling of your home.
So before you head out to buy a cart full of fall decor, look around your home first.
What can you simply switch, layer, rearrange, or remove?
Sometimes a small shift is all it takes to make your home feel ready for a new season.
