Thanks to everyone who entered! I loved reading your book recommendations. Keep an eye out for information about our next seasonal giveaway.

Earlier this summer, my husband ruptured his patella tendon, which required surgery and a recovery period that made it difficult for him to move around, let alone travel. It derailed some of our summer plans (although needless to say, I’m grateful that he’s recovering), but it also meant that some of our family members came to visit us instead. As a result, I’ve done more hosting than usual throughout July and August.

Because some of our guests have spent hours on the road to reach us, I’ve been trying to lean into being a good hostess and making their arrival feel as welcoming as possible. And after spending hours barely moving on the highway during peak summer traffic, I know there’s nothing quite like walking through the door and being offered something cold to drink and something delicious to snack on.

So I’ve been refining my approach to the easiest possible arrival snack: a simple snack board paired with a few refreshing drinks. Nothing overly elaborate, nothing that requires hours in the kitchen, and definitely nothing that needs to look like it belongs at a wedding reception. Just a pretty assortment of things people actually want to eat and drink when they arrive.

Here’s my formula for putting one together quickly—and the drinks I think make the perfect pairing.

The Secret to a Great Snack Board: Keep It Simple

One of my biggest hosting lessons is that a snack board doesn’t need to be enormous to feel generous. In fact, I think smaller, thoughtfully arranged boards often look more chic than a giant platter overflowing with 15 different foods. The goal is to give your guests a few different flavors and textures to choose from without making yourself crazy trying to shop for every possible snack.

I like to think in categories:

1. Start With Something Savory

Every snack board needs a good salty or savory element.

Cheese is the obvious choice, and you really only need one or two varieties. Sharp cheddar, a creamy brie, goat cheese, or manchego are all easy crowd-pleasers. You can also just buy one of those pre-portioned variety packs and arrange the cheese neatly.

If you want something that feels a little more elevated, add prosciutto or another thinly sliced cured meat. But if you’re serving vegetarian guests or want to keep things as easy as possible there’s absolutely no need for meat.

My rule: choose one cheese and one additional savory item.

That’s enough to anchor the board.

2. Add Something Crunchy

This is where crackers, toasted baguette slices, breadsticks, or nuts come in.

I usually like to have at least one substantial cracker that works well with cheese.

Nuts are another easy way to add texture. Roasted almonds, pistachios, or cashews work well.

And don’t underestimate the humble potato chip. A bowl of potato chips alongside an otherwise elevated snack board is surprisingly delicious.

3. Bring in Something Fresh

Fresh fruit is one of my favorite ways to make a snack board feel abundant without actually adding much work.

In summer, grapes, berries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and sliced melon are perfect.

I especially love grapes because you can simply wash them, put them on the board, and you’re done.

Fresh vegetables work, too. Cucumber slices, baby carrots, snap peas, and colorful bell peppers are easy options if you want something lighter.

4. Don’t Forget Something Sweet

A little sweetness makes the board feel finished.

Dark chocolate is probably my favorite because it requires absolutely no preparation. Just break a bar into a few pieces and tuck them around the board.

You could also add dried apricots, dates, chocolate-covered nuts, or a few small cookies.

This is one of those places where you don’t need to overthink it. A handful of something sweet goes a long way.

5. Add One “Special” Element

This is optional, but it’s my favorite trick for making a simple snack board feel more intentional.

Choose just one thing that feels a little special: fig jam, honey, olives or a flavorful spread.

You don’t need five little bowls of condiments. One is plenty.

For example, a little dish of honey alongside brie can make a very simple board feel like you put in much more effort than you actually did.

My Favorite Easy Snack Board Formula

If you want to make this as simple as possible, here’s the formula I’d use:

1 cheese + 1 savory item + 1 cracker + 1 fruit + 1 sweet + 1 special extra

That’s it.

For example:

  • Cheese
  • Prosciutto or nuts
  • Crackers
  • Grapes
  • Dark chocolate
  • Fig jam

Arrange everything on a wooden board, serving platter, or even a large dinner plate.

And don’t worry about making it perfectly symmetrical. Start by placing the cheese and any small bowl of jam or olives, then scatter everything else around them.

The key is to group similar foods together while leaving a little negative space between them. It should look full, but not crowded.

The Best Drinks to Serve With a Snack Board

Of course, snacks are only half of the arrival experience.

When guests have been driving for hours, I like to have something cold and refreshing ready as soon as they walk through the door. And while wine is an obvious choice, I think it’s worth having a few non-alcoholic options, too.

Water with a Garnish

I like serving still or sparkling water in a glass with ice and a slice of lemon, lime, orange, or cucumber. It feels more intentional than simply handing someone a bottle of water.

Lemonade or Iced Tea (Summer)

Lemonade is one of those drinks that instantly feels summery and welcoming. You can make a pitcher from scratch, but store-bought lemonade works perfectly well. Pour it into a glass pitcher and add lemon slices or a handful of fresh berries.

A pitcher of unsweetened or lightly sweetened iced tea is another great option, especially if you’re hosting during the afternoon. For a more elevated version, try adding fresh mint, lemon slices, peaches, or berries.

Apple Cider (Fall)

You can buy store bought apple cider and heat it in a pot or slow cooker with fresh orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves for 15-20 minutes. Your house will smell amazing, too.

A Simple Spritz

If you’re serving alcohol, I love a drink that doesn’t require a complicated cocktail recipe.

A simple spritz is perfect for this kind of casual hosting. Think sparkling wine or prosecco with a splash of something flavorful and plenty of ice.

You can also make a pitcher rather than mixing individual drinks, which means you’re not stuck playing bartender all afternoon.

Wine

For a snack board, you really don’t need to get too serious about wine pairings.

A crisp white wine, rosé, or sparkling wine works beautifully with most of the foods you’d find on a snack board.

And if you’re unsure what your guests prefer, ask! I’d much rather serve a wine someone actually enjoys than choose something “perfectly paired” that sits untouched.

One More Hosting Trick: Have Everything Ready Before They Arrive

When guests arrive after a long drive, you don’t want to disappear into the kitchen for 30 minutes assembling food. Instead, prepare as much as possible beforehand.

Wash and portion the fruit. Slice the cheese. Put the drinks in the fridge. Arrange the board shortly before your guests arrive and cover it until you’re ready to serve it.

For me, this summer has been a reminder that hospitality doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. The best hosting is often just about noticing what people need and making it easy for them to relax. And if a simple snack board and a refreshing drink can help someone finally exhale after hours on the highway, I’ll happily keep them on standby.
