May is always a full month for our family. Between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day weekend, we celebrate four family birthdays, and somehow a graduation party or shower always finds its way onto the calendar too.
It also means we travel often.
But even if your May looks quieter, there is something undeniably romantic about a weekend escape. It is the quiet luxury of stepping away from your everyday life, even if only for a few days. And truly, May is the perfect month for it.
But packing? That is where things can lose their charm.
For me, the biggest challenge has always been overpacking. The “just in case” pieces and the outfits that do not quite come together can turn what should feel effortless into something overwhelming. The goal, instead, is to pack like a woman who knows herself.
This is your chic weekend escape packing list, refined, minimal, and designed to make getting dressed feel like the easiest part of your trip.

1. Start With a Soft, Signature Color Palette
Before you fold a single item, choose a palette. This is the one area I tend to get right.
Think ivory, tan, soft black, light denim, and muted florals. Pieces that naturally blend together so everything you pack can be worn more than once and in more than one way.
When your colors are cohesive, your suitcase becomes a curated collection rather than a mix of maybes.
2. The Outfit Formula (Less, But Better)
For a two to three day trip, you only need a few thoughtfully chosen looks:
- 1 Elevated Travel Outfit
A matching set, relaxed trousers with a soft tee, or a knit dress with a light layer. Comfortable, but polished enough to carry you straight into lunch or coffee upon arrival. - 2 Daytime Looks
Easy, breathable, and repeatable.
Think a linen dress or denim with a crisp button down. - 1 Evening Look
Slightly more refined, but still effortless.
A slip dress, a monochrome set, or a simple black dress styled differently with accessories. - 1 Light Layer
A cardigan, blazer, or wrap. Something you will reach for without thinking.
Every piece should work together. That is the quiet secret.
3. Accessories That Do the Work
Instead of packing more clothes, pack better accessories.
- A structured tote or woven bag
- Minimal gold jewelry you never take off
- A pair of sunglasses that elevate everything
- A silk scarf for your hair, bag, or shoulders
These are the pieces that make a repeated outfit feel entirely new.
4. Shoes: Keep It Intentional
This one may be hard for some of us, and by some of us, I mean me. But you really only need three:
- A comfortable walking shoe such as clean sneakers or simple flats
- An elevated sandal or heel for evenings
- Optional, a second flat if your plans call for it
If they do not go with everything, they do not go in the bag.
5. Beauty, But Edited
A chic escape is not about a full routine. It is about feeling like yourself, just slightly undone.
- Glowy skin essentials such as tinted moisturizer, SPF, and blush
- A signature scent
- Lip balm or a soft lipstick
- Hair in its natural, easy state
Think effortless, not overdone.
6. The Extras That Make It Feel Like Luxury
This is where the magic lives.
- A book you have been wanting to read
- A notebook or journal
- A beautiful sleep set or lounge piece
- Your favorite tea or a small comfort from home
These are not necessary, but they transform the experience.
7. The Final Rule: Pack for the Life You Will Actually Live
Not the fantasy itinerary. Not the “just in case.”
Pack for slow mornings, spontaneous plans, and outfits you can reach for without thinking. Pieces that feel like you, on your best and most relaxed day.
Because true chicness is not about having more. It is about choosing well.
A weekend escape should feel like exhaling. And when your suitcase is thoughtfully packed, everything else follows.
We’d love to hear your weekend travel packing tips too.
