I’ve been thinking a lot about personal style lately. Maybe it’s because my social media feeds are filled with trend reports and women with bold, fashion-forward wardrobes. While I can certainly appreciate extravagant style, it has never felt like me.
What has resonated with me is how my own style has evolved over the years. I still love a beautiful dress and a designer handbag, but these days I’m drawn to impeccably tailored trousers, investment jewelry, and timeless pieces that I’ll wear for years.
That shift got me thinking about the women who have influenced my style over the years.
I’ve always been drawn to the classic elegance of the 1960s while also feeling a strong pull toward the effortless style of the 1970s, probably because both of my parents were fashionable and fun. While my own wardrobe is evolving into a modern interpretation of those influences, there are a few women from that era who continue to inspire me. Bianca Jagger is certainly one of them. She embodies the glamour and confidence of the time, but it’s her courage, advocacy, and impeccable sense of style that make her a true muse for me.
Most women have someone whose confidence, taste, or way of living makes them stop and take notice. That person is your muse. Not someone to copy. But, someone who helps you better understand your own style and the life you want to create.
If you’ve never thought about finding your personal muse, here are six simple ways to get started.
1. Notice who inspires you.
Pay attention to the women you admire again and again. They may be public figures, authors, designers, family members, or even friends. If someone consistently catches your attention, ask yourself why.
2. Look for the common thread.
Instead of focusing on specific outfits, think about what these women have in common. Are they polished? Creative? Minimalist? Confident? Sophisticated? The qualities you admire often reveal what you value most.
3. Create an inspiration board.
Save photos that reflect your ideal aesthetic. Include fashion, interiors, travel, flowers, entertaining, and art. Don’t overthink it. Simply collect what speaks to you. Over time, you’ll begin to see patterns.
4. Define your signature style.
Once you’ve identified those patterns, write down a few words that describe them. Classic. Feminine. Relaxed. Tailored. Colorful. These words can become your guide when shopping, decorating, or building your personal brand.
5. Use your muse as a filter.
Before making a purchase or trying a new trend, ask yourself if it fits the style and life you’re creating. This simple habit makes it easier to make thoughtful choices instead of impulsive ones.
6. Let your inspiration evolve.
Your muse doesn’t have to stay the same forever. As you grow, your interests and priorities will change. Give yourself permission to discover new sources of inspiration along the way.
Finding your personal muse isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about paying attention to what consistently inspires you and using those insights to create a style that feels authentic.
Who inspires you? I’d love to hear who your muse is and what you’ve learned from her.
