Why Monograms are Peak Chic

One thing that I find incredibly chic: a monogram. Monograms are having a moment again but they’ve always been a quiet symbol of personal style and intentional living. They’re personal without being flashy, and they have a way of making everyday items feel special.

From heirloom linens to everyday accessories, a monogram adds a subtle signature to the things you use and love. It’s the kind of detail that feels both old-world and effortlessly modern—exactly the balance that defines chic style.

The History Behind Monograms

Monograms have long been associated with refinement. Historically, aristocratic families used monograms on stationery, silver, and linens as a mark of ownership and lineage. Over time, the tradition expanded beyond nobility and became a hallmark of classic style.

Think embroidered pillowcases, personalized stationery, and monogrammed travel bags—small touches that signal care, thoughtfulness, and a sense of permanence.

Today, monograms are still popular because they combine two things people love: personalization and tradition.

The Proper Way to Do a Monogram

If you’re new to monograms, there is actually a traditional way to format them. While modern variations exist, the classic style remains the most timeless.

For a traditional three-letter monogram:

  • First initial appears on the left
  • Last initial appears larger in the center
  • Middle initial appears on the right

Example for Jane Elizabeth Smith:

J S E

The larger center letter highlights the family name, which is why this format has long been associated with heritage and tradition.

Other common monogram styles include:

Block monogram: All letters the same size (JES)

Couples monogram: First initial, shared last name, partner’s first initial (JSM)

Single-letter monogram: Just the last name initial for a bold, minimal look

When in doubt, simple serif or classic script fonts tend to look the most timeless.

Chic Ways to Incorporate Monograms Into Everyday Life

1. The Iconic Boat Tote

Few accessories are as effortlessly chic as a monogrammed L.L.Bean Boat and Tote. Originally designed as a rugged ice bag in the 1940s, it has become a staple of classic American style.

A monogram adds just the right amount of personality without sacrificing its understated look. It’s perfect for farmers market mornings, beach days, library trips, and everyday errands.

Alternatively, the Lands End Tote is a great option that offers even more customization. I’ve been using a medium size Lands End tote as my “mom bag” and I love its functionality. You can find a thorough comparison of the LL Bean tote and the Lands End tote here.

A monogram in a complementary color keeps the bag feeling timeless.

2. Monogrammed Travel Bags

Travel is one of the chicest places to incorporate a monogram. Historically, monograms were used on luggage for a very practical reason: identification. Before standardized luggage tags, travelers marked trunks and bags with their initials so they could easily be recognized.

Today, the tradition continues—but with a decidedly stylish twist.

A monogrammed weekender bag or travel duffel feels both classic and intentional. It evokes the golden age of travel—think elegant train journeys, vintage steamer trunks, and beautifully packed overnight bags.

3. Monogrammed Linen Napkins

If you love a beautiful table, monogrammed linen napkins are one of the chicest upgrades you can make.

They evoke the charm of French country homes and old-world entertaining. A subtle embroidered initial in the corner instantly elevates a simple dinner party or Sunday brunch.

Pair them with crisp white plates and fresh flowers for an effortlessly polished look.

4. Personalized Stationery

Nothing feels more thoughtful than a handwritten note, and monogrammed stationery makes the gesture even more special.

A simple set of correspondence cards with your monogram can be used for thank-you notes, invitations, holiday greetings, or everyday correspondence.

It’s one of those small luxuries that makes daily life feel more intentional.

5. Subtle Monograms on Clothing

Some of my favorite brands like J.Crew, Sezane, Doen and Eberjey offer the option to monogram some of their tops. I usually pass on this option but going forward I want to start to monogramming more items that I love (and know I won’t be returning).

If you don’t love the idea of a very visible monogram on your clothing, a discreet monogram on a shirt cuff or sweater hem is one of the most understated ways to incorporate the trend.

It’s subtle enough that most people won’t notice immediately—but those who do will appreciate the detail. Think of it as the fashion equivalent of a signature.

Why Monograms Will Always Be Chic

At their core, monograms represent something increasingly rare in fashion: permanence. They’re tied to identity, tradition, and the idea that the things we own should be meaningful.

While trends come and go, a beautifully done monogram never feels out of place. It simply becomes part of your personal story.
