The polka dot Sézane blouse that I mentioned in our Spring Capsule guide didn’t work out for me, so I used my return credit to get a few nice t-shirts instead- the Léon, Conrad and Martha. I’m actually looking forward to styling these t-shirts because I believe the humble t-shirt is one of the most versatile pieces in any wardrobe. It’s comfortable, effortless, and endlessly wearable. I love a simple tee/jeans or tee/shorts combo, but sometimes it can feel a little too casual. The good news is that with a few thoughtful styling choices, a simple t-shirt can easily become part of a polished, chic outfit.

Whether you’re running errands, meeting friends for coffee, or putting together a casual but refined look, here are a few ways to elevate this everyday staple.

Start With a High-Quality Tee

The foundation of an elevated look is a well-made t-shirt. Look for tees in thicker cotton, cotton-modal or cotton-linen blends, or structured knits that hold their shape well. A flattering neckline—whether crew, boatneck, or a slightly relaxed scoop—can make a noticeable difference. Apart from the Sézane t-shirts I mentioned above, here are a few other quality t-shirts I like (click the photos to shop):

Neutral colors like white, ivory, navy, and black tend to look the most polished and pair easily with the rest of your wardrobe, but stripes are also timeless and versatile. Outside of neutrals, t-shirts are an easy way to incorporate your spring accent colors or tie in a trending color. When the fabric drapes nicely and the fit is intentional rather than sloppy, a t-shirt instantly feels more refined.

Pair It With Structured Pieces

One of the easiest ways to dress up a t-shirt is to contrast it with something structured.

A tailored blazer, a well-cut pair of trousers, or a polished midi skirt can transform a casual tee into an outfit that feels thoughtful and put together. The juxtaposition of relaxed and structured pieces creates balance and makes the look feel effortless rather than overly styled.

A simple white tee with high-waisted trousers and a blazer, for example, is a classic combination that works in many settings.

Tuck or Style the Silhouette

How you wear the t-shirt matters just as much as what you pair it with.

A full tuck into high-waisted jeans or trousers immediately creates a more defined silhouette. A half-tuck can add a bit of relaxed polish, while a neatly knotted hem can add shape when wearing skirts or wider pants.

Small adjustments like these make the outfit feel intentional rather than thrown together.

Add Elevated Accessories

Accessories can completely change the tone of a t-shirt outfit.

Gold jewelry, a silk scarf or bandanna, a structured handbag, or a pair of chic sunglasses can instantly elevate the look. Even something as simple as a delicate necklace layered over a crewneck tee can add interest and sophistication.

Shoes also play a big role. Ballet flats, loafers, or elegant sandals will create a more refined feel than overly casual footwear.

Choose Polished Bottoms

Instead of pairing a t-shirt only with casual denim, try combining it with more refined pieces.

Midi skirts, tailored shorts, linen trousers, or wide-leg pants all help create an outfit that feels intentional and stylish while still being comfortable. This approach keeps the ease of the t-shirt while elevating the overall look.

Layer Thoughtfully

Layering can add depth and polish to even the simplest outfit.

A lightweight cardigan draped over the shoulders or a structured jacket can add dimension and interest. This is especially useful during transitional seasons when layering naturally becomes part of everyday dressing.

One of the best things about styling a simple t-shirt is that it proves how powerful great basics can be. When the rest of the outfit is thoughtfully styled, even the most casual piece can feel refined and chic.
