Summer Al Fresco Dining Must-Haves

Everything You Need for Effortless Outdoor Gatherings

While it’s much too hot here for Al Fresco dining right now (we’ve had a record high heat wave all week), I’m still dreaming about hosting the first summer Al Fresco dinner at our new house once our boxes are empty and the temperatures have dropped a little.

As a July baby, I’ve always been attracted to outdoor activities during this time of year, and there’s nothing like dining outside in the summer—soft twilight skies, a warm breeze, the clink of glasses under string lights. Whether it’s brunch on the patio, a sunset dinner party, or casual bites in the backyard, al fresco meals are a seasonal joy worth savoring.

Here are the chic essentials to elevate your outdoor dining experience—Real Chic Life style:

1. A Beautifully Set Table

Skip the paper plates—summer is the time for lightweight melamine or rattan chargers, linen napkins in breezy tones, and casual-chic dinnerware that feels special but easy.

Chic Picks:

 2. Ambient Lighting

Create a warm, inviting glow with soft lighting. As the sun sets, keep the mood cozy with layers of light.

Try:

3. Seasonal Menu Staples

Keep it fresh and unfussy. Think shared platters and easy prep. Bonus points for make-ahead dishes.

Ideas:

  • Grilled peaches or stone fruit salad
  • Chilled pasta with lemon vinaigrette
  • Herby broiled salmon or citrus-marinated shrimp
  • Signature summer cocktail or mocktail in a pitcher

4. Comfortable, Stylish Seating

Make guests linger longer with cozy seating: outdoor pillows, throw blankets for after-dark breezes, or a bench with cushions.

Tip: Mix structured chairs with woven stools or poufs for a laid-back vibe.

5. Fresh Florals or Greenery

A single vase of wildflowers or a few bud vases with clipped herbs or garden blooms is all you need.

Chic option: A low, lush centerpiece using what’s in season—zinnias, dahlias, basil, mint, or eucalyptus.

6. A Feel-Good Playlist

Music sets the tone. Go for something relaxed and transportive: soft soul, jazz, or indie acoustic. Keep the volume low and the energy high.

Keep It Easy

Al fresco dining isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. Choose easy recipes (I’ve shared one below), pour a cold drink, and enjoy the magic of good company under the open sky.

Grilled Corn & Avocado Summer Salad

A light, colorful salad bursting with summer flavors.

Serves: 4

Prep Time: 15 min

Cook Time: 10 min

Ingredients

  • 2 ears of corn, grilled and kernels removed
  • 1 ripe avocado, diced
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Grill the corn on medium heat until slightly charred. Let cool, then slice off the kernels.
  2. In a large bowl, combine corn, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, feta, and cilantro.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lime juice, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the dressing over the salad and gently toss to combine.
  5. Serve immediately or chill slightly for a refreshing side dish.

This salad pairs beautifully with grilled shrimp or chicken for a complete summer meal.
