I have to admit I wasn’t a huge fan of Valentine’s Day until a couple of years ago. I’ve celebrated more than a dozen times with my husband, but for several years the holiday revolved around trying to get a reservation (and usually ending up with an inconvenient one) at a local restaurant, long wait times, and feeling sorry for stressed out, overworked staff. We’d end the night trying to stay awake in a late movie. When our family grew, we got tired of hiring a sitter to take part in the Valentine’s Day restaurant surge. We pivoted to staying in and ordering takeout instead. Then a couple of years ago I started making a Valentine’s Day breakfast with my kids, with decor from The Confetti Code. We also exchange small sweets and books, and I usually dress up in clothing that feels romantic (like a soft pink sweater or this floral wrap dress from Rouje, one of my favorite investments last year). These changes make the holiday feel light and sweet, and it’s become one of my favorites. But I think we all need more excuses to go out and do fun things this year. So if you don’t typically celebrate, or if you do celebrate but you’re looking for an alternative to your usual dinner reservation, here are six fun activities to try. And no need to bring a romantic partner, these activities are just as fun with friends or as a solo, self-love date.
1. Take a Mystery Road Trip
Pick a direction, set a timer for an hour or two, and drive with no set destination. Stop at interesting roadside attractions, small-town shops, or scenic overlooks along the way. Pack some snacks or a picnic lunch/dinner to eat during your trip. If you’re not up for mystery, pick a quaint tourist town within a reasonable drive.
2. Host a Cozy Indoor Picnic
Spread out a blanket, light some candles, and create a delicious spread of your favorite snacks. If you’re solo, make it a self-care picnic with a good book or your favorite movie. If you’re with a date or friends, bring a mix of appetizers and desserts to share, plus some fun games and a movie.
3. Take a Class
Dancing, art, wine appreciation, candle making— there are so many interesting classes to explore solo or as a couple/group. If you can’t find anything local, try an online cooking or dance class.
4. Pamper Yourself with a Spa Day
Book a relaxing spa treatment like a massage or facial. If you’re going with a date of the opposite sex, try to find a spa that has co-ed relaxation areas or a heated/indoor pool. OR create a DIY spa night at home. Light some candles, play soothing music, and indulge in decadent snacks.
5. Attend a Concert or Play
Instead of a traditional dinner, make it a night of entertainment by seeing a live concert, play, or comedy show. If you’re solo, treat yourself to an artist or performance you’ve been wanting to see.
6. Go Stargazing with a Blanket and Hot Drinks
Weather permitting, grab a cozy blanket and a thermos of hot chocolate and head outside to admire the night sky. Bring a journal and reflect on your dreams. If you’re with a partner or friends, turn it into a night of storytelling, deep conversations, or manifesting.
