Each year I write a post where I break down what my word of the year means to me and how I plan to implement it over the coming year (you can read last year’s WOTY here). Over the past few weeks I’ve spent quite a bit of time thinking about my word for 2025. A few words have surfaced- and though they aren’t the special word I plan to use to guide my year (more about the selected word in my next post), I do plan to lean into them. They’re all words that reflect what I want to do or see more of in the coming year. Joy is one of those words. That probably isn’t surprising to you if you have been a long-time subscriber. Our whole ethos is built around cultivating joy. But joy can take on different significances depending on what is happening with or around us. It may seem easy to embrace joy when things are going well, or frivolous and glib when things are challenging, but sometimes choosing joy is the bravest thing you can do.
Last night I watched The Six Triple Eight -the historical Netflix film about the women of the 6888 Army Corps. What stood out most was how they found pockets of joy in such arduous circumstances- a self-made beauty parlor in the dilapidated building they were forced to live in, weekend socials that they didn’t think they had time for, and even shared moments of laughter as they worked under grueling circumstances to meet their seemingly impossible deadline. It reminded me that situations don’t have to be ideal to experience joy. And that big changes aren’t always necessary; sometimes, the small things make the biggest difference.
So, no matter how you’re feeling about the upcoming year, we think it’s the perfect time to reflect, reset, and focus on bringing more joy into our lives. Here are some simple, everyday practices to cultivate happiness and positivity throughout the year:
1. Do One Thing You Love Every Day
Hobbies and activities you enjoy can bring bursts of happiness. Whether it’s painting, reading, cooking, or gardening, make space for what lights you up.
Action Step: Block time on your calendar for your favorite activity, even if it’s just 15 minutes.
2. Give Back to Others
Helping others can boost your own joy. Volunteer, donate, or perform small acts of kindness.
Quick Idea: Keep a “kindness jar” and add one idea each week to try.
3. Simplify Your Life
Decluttering your space and commitments can create a sense of calm and focus. Start small—clear out one drawer, or say “no” to obligations that don’t align with your priorities.
Challenge: Donate or recycle 10 items you no longer need.
4. Move Your Body
Physical activity isn’t just good for your health; it’s a proven mood booster. Find something you enjoy, whether it’s yoga, dancing, or a brisk walk around the block.
Bonus: Pair exercise with something fun, like listening to your favorite podcast or playlist. If you’re a writer I highly recommend TSNOTYAW.
5. Celebrate Small Wins
Don’t wait for big milestones to celebrate. Acknowledge your progress and achievements, no matter how small. It’s a great way to stay motivated and build confidence.
Example: Treat yourself when you complete a project or reach a personal goal.
6. Set Intentions, Not Just Goals
Goals focus on outcomes, but intentions emphasize how you want to feel. For example, instead of setting a goal to exercise daily, set an intention to feel more energized and strong.
Tip: Write your intentions somewhere visible to stay inspired.
7. Laugh More
Laughter truly is the best medicine. Seek out humor through funny movies, books, or spending time with people who make you smile.
Challenge: Try a daily “laugh break” by watching a short comedy clip or telling a silly joke.
The key to cultivating joy is to find what works for you and weave it into your daily life. Small, consistent changes can create a ripple effect, making your days brighter and your new year more fulfilling.
