How to Build Your Perfect Fall Capsule Wardrobe

In our last blog post, Tonya explained how to always look put together. Continuing that theme, one way to help you look put together with minimal effort each day, is to invest in a capsule wardrobe. If you’re new to the blog, we often write about the benefits of building a capsule wardrobe because they encourage us to invest in thoughtful, quality purchases that make it easier to decide what to wear each day. Limiting your choices to a core capsule wardrobe can help you refine and focus on a cohesive style, giving you a better sense of what suits you and what you love to wear. Because fall is often considered prime fashion season, there is no better time to start building or to refine your capsule wardrobe. A well curated capsule should carry you through the winter. Here are 6 steps to build a fall capsule wardrobe:

1. Identify Your Core Colors– Your capsule wardrobe should include neutral essentials that are the building blocks of your wardrobe. They go with almost everything and help create a cohesive look. You should also identify 1-2 seasonal colors for accessories, blouses and sweaters. These add color and dimension to your overall look, and bring out more of your personal style. And finally identify your power color. A dress, top or a coat in your power color is sure to make you feel bold and confident. 2. Choose Layering Basics– Make sure you have a few fitted long-sleeve tops and cardigans in neutral colors for layering or wearing solo. Then incorporate 1-2 blouses or button down shirts in neutral colors or seasonal colors. A silk blouse always looks elegant this time of year and transitions well into the holiday season. Add a few additional sweaters in a mix of cozy knits (or luxe options like cashmere if they’re a good fit for your lifestyle) in colors that fit your palette. Finally add outwear for layering on warmer fall days. A lightweight trench coat, a denim jacket, and a tailored blazer will cover all the bases.

3. Pick Staple Bottoms– Include a classic pair of jeans in a medium to dark wash or black, that can be dressed up or down. Add a well-tailored pair of trousers in black or gray for work or evening events. Finally add a midi skirt in a neutral color or one of your fall accent colors, that can be paired with tights and boots.

4. Add Outerwear Essentials– A classic wool coat in a neutral color or your power color is perfect for chilly days. I love a wrap coat or a coat with a tailored collar because they are timeless and chic. A classic coat will complement dressy outfits and elevate casual outfits. Add a parka or puffer jacket for really chilly days when you have outdoor activities on your agenda.

5. Incorporate Versatile Dresses– Choose 1-2 knit or sweater dresses in a neutral shade. These can be layered with tights, boots, and a jacket on cold days. Then incorporate a dress in your power color or seasonal accent color. A classic shirtdress can be worn on its own or styled with a sweater on top.

6. Select Accessories– Choose a chunky knit scarf or a lightweight option in a complementary color. Ankle boots and knee-high boots are both great choices for fall and can work with jeans, trousers, or dresses. A crossbody or tote bag in a neutral color is practical and goes with all outfits. And you can use belts to add polish to your denim or trouser ensembles; a black leather or faux leather belt and a brown leather belt will work with most outfits.
