A Girl’s Trip to Charming St. Augustine

If you’ve been following along on social, you know that I went on a girl’s trip to St. Augustine, Florida a week ago. Before our trip, I did a little research on St. Augustine. What I discovered is that St. Augustine is a city steeped in history. It’s noted as America’s oldest city. However, even after reading all of this I still expected the same Floridian vibe that I’ve experienced in many other cities in the state, but I was in for quite a surprise.

St. Augustine is quite the city! It has a mix of southern charm (think Charleston, South Carolina)- colorful buildings, seaside, and cute and quirky shops along cobblestone walkways. Now add in a scoop of New Orleans style- street musicians, themed bars (check out this one that a friend recommended) and delicious eats at every turn.

Here’s my quick guide:

Where to stay-there are several lodging options in downtown St. Augustine. Most are going to be Inn-style historic buildings that have been renovated into quaint and charming boutique hotels. We stayed at the St. George Inn right in the heart of the pedestrian-only St. George Street. It’s within walking distance to many attractions and restaurants. Our rooms were located above the cutest courtyard that had daily music, and it’s home to the Bin 39 Wine Bar that we visited at least twice a day- not just for wine, we also ate our breakfast there each day and enjoyed afternoon charcuterie. One night they hosted a party where people from all over the city came to enjoy a wine tasting and delicious appetizers. There was also a chocolate shop, a cigar shop, and a coffee shop in that courtyard. If you’re looking for something less quaint and more glam you might want to check out the Casa Monica Resort and Spa. This is where I’d stay on a return visit with my husband as it has such a romantic vibe. We had lunch there one day but I’ll get to that later.

What to do– there’s so much to do in downtown St. Augustine and almost everything is within walking distance. If you’re a history buff like my daughter and husband you’ll want to check out Castillo de San Marcos, the Oldest House Museum, the Lightner Museum, and take a tour of the historic Flagler College (both of the aforementioned locations were built by oil tycoon/railroad magnate Henry Flagler). Be sure to stop by the Ice Plant Bar, and the St. Augustine Distillery – for handcrafted, award-winning bourbon, rum, gin and vodka. My husband would love this spot.

If you’re into health and wellness experiences like me you’ll want to check out the Salt Cave Experience at the Salt Spa. They have a float tank, infrared sauna, traditional massages, and the most incredible rejuvenating Salt Cave. I had such a wonderful visit there that I asked where other Salt Caves might be located in the U.S. as I couldn’t wait to visit again. Imagine my surprise when she said there was only one other cave in the U.S. and it was located in Williamsburg Va, a mere 20 minutes from my front door (you can read more about the Salt Cave Therapy here).

Where to dine– I’m a self-proclaimed foodie and always judge a place by the cuisine. St. Augustine did not disappoint. Everywhere we ate was top-notch. It’s almost too hard to pick a favorite but I will say that the most unique meal I had was at Michael’s. The head chef is of Puerto Rican ancestry and I selected the Criollo Shrimp Mofongo- made with crispy yuca, criollo shrimp, and smoked tomato nage inspired by his Puerto Rican roots. I’d travel back just to enjoy this scrumptious meal again. It was the Chef’s Kiss. But honestly, they were all 5 stars in my book. Here are a few you should add to your list. Catch 27, Cordova Chop House (we had a lovely hosted luncheon there set up by the fabulous Safura from 904 With Us), and Columbia Restaurant

So that’s my round-up of what to do in St. Augustine. It made for the perfect girls’ trip but it’s also family-friendly and romantic so I think anyone would benefit from a visit to the oldest city in America.

Oh, and one more thing- the 2024 HGTV dream home is located there on Anastasia Island (home of the historic St. Augustine Light House) which was a quick drive from our hotel. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a big HGTV fan so getting a private tour of this gorgeous place was a dream come true. Now if only my name would get selected as the winner, St. Augustine could become my second home (fingers crossed emoji). Send me good luck vibes friends!

Have you been to St. Augustine? I’d love to hear about some of your favorite places. And if not, you can learn more here.

  1. I haven’t been to St Augustine in probably 40+ years (as a kid with y parents). Looks so charming now through my adult eyes. I would love to go for a long weekend. Do you fly into Jacksonville airport?
