The Art of Doing Less: A Chic Guide to Summer Stillness

I just celebrated a birthday, and I don’t know about you, but I always see this as a time to reflect. Recently, I saw someone posting frantically about how we only have so much time left in the year, and it made me think that late July may not be the time to sprint. Perhaps instead of going hard during the second half of the year, it’s instead a time to soften.

I’ve been thinking about hustle culture a lot, and while I am a goal-driven person, the idea of always talking about how busy we are doesn’t appeal to me at all right now. Maybe in a world that equates busyness with worth, choosing to do less — on purpose — is a radical act of self-trust.

At The Real Chic Life, we believe in intentional elegance, and that includes how we move through our summer days.

So what if this moment isn’t about getting more done — but about feeling more whole?

If this resonates with you, too, below is your guide to slowing down with style. Welcome to the art of doing less.

1. What Slowness Really Means (and Why Chic Women Protect It)

Slowness isn’t laziness. It’s clarity.

When we give ourselves permission to pause, we’re not falling behind — we’re catching up with ourselves. The most self-assured women don’t chase time. They own it.

This season, choose to protect your peace with the same devotion you give your plans.

2. The 3-Thing Day: A Real Chic Ritual

Here’s your summer simplicity formula:

One thing for your mind

One thing for your body

One thing for joy

That’s it.

No mile-long to-do lists. No pressure to multitask. Just three focused, fulfilling acts that move your day forward with grace. You’ll be amazed how grounding this feels.

3. Create a “No List”

Doing less isn’t just about what you do — it’s also about what you don’t.

Write your own “No List” this week. Here are some examples:

  • No people-pleasing.
  • No scrolling before breakfast.
  • No saying yes out of guilt.
  • No skipping rest to prove a point.

4. Romanticize the Pause

Stillness doesn’t have to feel boring. Make it beautiful:

  • Light a candle at 3 PM, just because.
  • Eat fruit from your prettiest dish.
  • Read poetry on your balcony.
  • Let music play through an ordinary task.

The more you celebrate the quiet moments, the more they begin to shape your sense of self.

5. Stillness Is a Reset, Too

Doing less isn’t a detour from your growth — it’s part of the journey.

Think of this moment as the inhale before autumn’s exhale. You’re not falling behind. You’re refueling. Your energy deserves rhythm, not just motion.

Let This Be Our New Chic Habit:

Less hustle. More presence.

Less proving. More becoming.

Doing less — with intention — might just be your most elegant move yet.
