10 Easy Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

The other day at dinner George asked what we’d like to do to give back during the holidays. This made me think about my commitment to growing and fostering community as we move into the new year. And while the holiday season is a time for joy, gratitude, and generosity, it’s also the perfect time to spread kindness to those in need. If you missed Giving Tuesday earlier this week, or if you’re like me and you’re looking for even more ways to give back- here are ten simple, yet meaningful ways to make a difference this season:

1. Donate Essentials

Clothing and Blankets: Clean out your closet and donate gently used coats, scarves, gloves, and blankets to local shelters or winter clothing drives.

Non-Perishable Food: Contribute to food banks or community pantries with canned goods, pasta, or boxed meals. Many organizations also accept monetary donations to purchase fresh produce.

Toys and Books: Brighten a child’s holiday by donating new or gently used toys and books to programs like Toys for Tots or local charities.

2. Support Local Businesses

Shop at small, locally owned businesses for gifts or holiday supplies. Many small businesses are the heart of their communities and benefit greatly from your support.

Order from local bakeries or cafes for your holiday treats to give them a seasonal boost.

3. Volunteer Your Time

Community Kitchens: Spend a few hours serving meals at a soup kitchen or food bank.

Senior Centers: Visit seniors to share stories, play games, or simply offer companionship.

Animal Shelters: Walk dogs, play with cats, or help clean and organize.

4. Spread Kindness in Small Ways

Pay It Forward: Buy a coffee or a meal for the person in line behind you.

Leave Notes of Encouragement: Write uplifting messages and leave them in public places like libraries, community boards, or on car windshields.

Check on Neighbors: Offer to shovel snow, pick up groceries, or run errands for elderly or busy neighbors.

5. Participate in Holiday Giving Programs

Adopt-a-Family: Many organizations match you with a family in need, allowing you to provide holiday meals, gifts, or essentials.

Angel Trees: Select a gift tag from an angel tree at your local mall or community center and fulfill a child’s wish.

Virtual Giving: Participate in online giving campaigns through platforms like GoFundMe or Giving Tuesday initiatives.

6. Share Your Skills

Offer free lessons or services—such as tutoring, resume writing, or home repairs—to those who might benefit from your expertise.

Host a free virtual workshop or class for your community, like cooking or crafting.

7. Donate Blood or Plasma

George does this a couple of times of year. His blood type is always sought after for donations but all blood donations are needed, especially during the holiday season when supplies often run low. Check with organizations like the Red Cross for local donation drives.

8. Gift Your Time to Loved Ones

Not all giving has to be monetary. Spend quality time with friends and family who might feel lonely or overwhelmed during the holidays. Your presence can be the greatest gift.

9. Reduce Waste and Recycle

Donate old electronics, appliances, or furniture instead of discarding them.

Choose sustainable wrapping methods like reusable fabric, brown paper, or repurposed newspaper.

10. Create a Giving Tradition

Involve your family in a yearly tradition, like baking cookies for neighbors, writing cards for troops, or organizing a mini fundraiser.

Teach children the value of giving by encouraging them to select a toy to donate or participate in volunteer activities.

By incorporating even one or two of these ideas into your holiday routine, you can create meaningful connections and make a lasting impact on your community. Giving back doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive—it’s about spreading kindness and joy in the ways that matter most.

I’d love to hear about any give-back traditions you might already have!

Until next post,

Xo Tonya Parker
