My Favorite Warm and Stylish Winter Coats

I used to wish I lived in an area where it was pretty warm all year long, but then I’d think about how much I love fall clothing and winter coats and suddenly I’d have a flashback of early ’90s college aged me walking around Charleston, SC with my fabulous girlfriends in full-length leather fall coats and boots. And before you start wondering if there was some weird weather thing going on that made that doable in an area that doesn’t typically see fall temps lower than 60- the answer is no. We did it for the love of what we thought was fashionable at the time, and we probably looked pretty silly in hindsight.

I’ve actually grown to appreciate the four seasons for many reasons, most not fashion-driven at all. And At this point in my life, I’m less interested in keeping up and more interested in keeping warm but that doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice style.

Here are a few of my faves:

The Lady Coat- you’ve probably heard me talk about this one before. I have two of these from JCrew and if I only had one winter coat this would be it. I love that it can be dressed up or down. It looks elegant with dresses and chic with jeans. It’s also warm enough to wear on a fairly cold day. I’ve worn it with a beanie, scarf, and gloves even when there’s a foot of snow on the ground.

The Double Collar Coat- this coat reminds me of my favorite wrap cardigan for fall so I’m happy to have a winter version too. I love that it’s belted! I think that style flatters most figures and the wool-blend material is cozy and warm. I have it in gray, which I think is a fresh color for winter. It reminds me of fresh starts and new beginnings. It also comes in an elegant-looking camel color too.

The Down Long Coat– I actually have two of these as well. I received the maxi version when attending an Oprah’s Fave Things Party a few years ago and while it’s fabulous, I don’t wear it as much because it’s typically not cold enough where I live to make the length practical. However, I’ve held onto it for winter trips. It would certainly be a welcome addition in colder temps. The shorter version however is perfect for winter in my area. It’s gotten quite a bit of wear this year as we’ve had a couple of snowfalls already. This one is perfect if I’m going to spend extended time outdoors playing with the grandkids or taking Harley for walks on chilly days. The removable fur collar also adds a little bit of winter glam.

And if you live in slightly warmer temps this Quilted Car Coat is perfect too. If you’re anything like me you spend more time in your car than outdoors while running errands. I always find myself awkwardly trying to remove my coat when the car reaches an ideal temp. It’s typically too warm to keep the coat on but too cool to go without in the dead of winter. The car coat is perfect. It’s lightweight and surprisingly warm and I love the length and quilted design making it timeless too. It’s also roomy enough to wear over sweaters which makes it ideal for this time of year.

And for those of you in even warmer temps who are still looking to add a little winter flare, swap out your fave denim jacket for this one. The fur collar adds a little nod to winter and lots of pizzazz too!

I know many of us are already looking for spring wardrobe items but this is a great time to add at least one winter coat to your wardrobe as many of them are on sale. And unlike the aforementioned long leather trench, these will all be in style for years to come.

I’d love to hear about your favorite winter coat style and why it works best for where you live too!

Until next post,

This is not a sponsored post but I did personally select a few of the coats above during previous brand collabs. All opinions here are my own.

  1. The J.Crew Lady Coat is my absolute favorite too! It’s surprisingly warm, even for NY winters. I’m always on the lookout for new coat and jackets since we spend most of the year wearing them, so I love your suggestions! XO Nipa
